Product Description
TGW’s gas caps are OEM quality both in construction and material and a direct fit for 1978-1991 Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Cherokee & J Trucks.
Gas caps have 3 very important functions; safety of the vehicle's occupants, fuel economy and reduced emissions.
1) Safety:
Without a fuel cap, gas vapors will be in & around your Jeep at all times. These vapors can be ignited by a random spark or flame and are very dangerous if you are involved in an accident.
2) Fuel Economy:
According to research, a vehicle with a missing or inoperative gas cap can allow up to 22 gallons of gasoline to evaporate over the period of one year.
3) Emissions:
Gas vapors emit hydrocarbons which cause smog.
Because Jeep SJ’s use a vacuum fuel system, the fuel cap can be to blame for vapor lock. Vapor Lock is not a common problem for fuel injected vehicles but since Jeep Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneers, Cherokees & J Trucks are carbureted and have a mechanical fuel pump you have a good chance of it happening to you! If your gas cap is unable to hold pressure, it needs to be replaced right away!
Vapor lock happens when the gas in the fuel lines turn from a liquid to vapor before it gets to the engine. Fuel will turn to vapor in high heat and low pressure. When the fuel lines to the engine get hot the fuel inside become hot and begins to vaporize. The fuel pump will not be able to move the vaporized fuel and the engine will stall.
The first signs of Vapor Lock usually are when your engine begins to run rough and may start to sputter and hesitate. Your Jeep will then stall completely and refuse to start. It may act like it is out of gas or the fuel pump is not working, while these are possibilities, vapor lock could be the problem.
The least expensive fix for vapor lock is replacing the gas cap.
We also offer a locking gas cap to prevent fuel theft and vandalism.
